Upon you making contact with me, we will arrange an initial consultation, as part of a more ongoing assessment and understanding of your presenting difficulties and therapy needs. In this initial phase we will discuss things such as your reasons for seeking counselling/therapy, previous experiences with it, and the nature of the help you are seeking. (If you are attending under a Mental Health Care Plan we will conduct a review after 6 sessions which provides an opportunity to assess and discuss your ongoing therapy needs.)
Some people report symptom relief after just a few sessions of counselling. This is particularly likely to be the case in instances where presenting problems are fairly circumscribed, such as with certain types of anxiety, or when they arise from specific life circumstances or crises, such as bereavement, job loss or the break up of a relationship.
Where problems are longer-standing in nature, or are associated with more pervasive personality and/or problematic relationship patterns, longer-term psychotherapy may be required in order to achieve more substantial and sustained benefits.
